Conditions of purchase

The system of e-commerce will be used to purchase a file containing a selected image or images.
Every individual file will have a purchasing licence attached to it. There are four types of purchasing licence

  • study
  • one year on the Web
  • multimedia
  • press edition

The client must indicate the type of purchasing licence required and must agree to a declaration that will oblige him/her to use the file solely for the use pertaining to the declaration.

The study licence is exclusively for students and all those who will use the photo for motives of study or research and not for profit-making purposes. The study licence permits the printing of the image for university theses and in the publication of scientific magazines. This license is valid for one edition of a printed medium, in only one language, with a circulation less than 2000 copies and with a cover price lower than € 77.50, which are exempt from the payment of a tariff regarding the rights of reproduction.

The web licence permits use on internet sites and is valid exclusively for the period of one year on one site only.

The multimedia  licence permits use on only one edition of a CD rom or DVD.

The  press edition licence is valid for only one edition of a printed medium in one language only.

No licence is valid for the publication of guides or monographs that relate exclusively to: monuments; archeological areas; museum locations of the Soprintendenza or for scientific catalogues or university theses on the typology of the material. For reproductions to be used in certain types of publication, using any of the possible forms of media, authorization from the Soprintendenza must be obtained.

Any other use of the image that is not discussed above, will be subject to particular authorization. This includes publications in more than one language.

The use of images to create an iconographic or photographic archive or insertion in existing archives is forbidden.

Sale or loan of images and purchasing licences to a third party is also forbidden

The purchase of any of the licences to reproduce an image includes a commitment to declare the  ‘Ministero per i Beni Culturali Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma’ among the credited sources. The caption accompanying the image must also clearly state the precise location of the exhibit shown.

The purchasing licences differ not only in price but also in file format.
The system makes the following formats available:

  • Low density (Jpeg format, dimensions in pixels are 1/4th of the original image)
  • Medium density (Jpeg format, dimensions in pixels are half of the original image)
  • High density (Tiff format, same dimensions in pixels as the original image)

For use on the web reduced Jpeg format is advisable, while for CD rom and broadband, original Jpeg.
For printed publications, the Tiff format is preferable.
