Villa dei Quintili

The villa is located East of the ancient Via Appia, opposite to the V mile from Rome. It is the largest and richest villa of the suburbs. It is named Villa dei Quintili for the finding, in 1828, of some water pan’s pipes with the names of Sex. Quintilius Condianus and Sex. Quintilius Valerius Maximus, consuls in 151 A.D., who are believed to be the first owners of the house. During Antoninus Pius’ (138 – 161 A.D.) and Marcus Aurelius’ reigns these two men occupied important offices in Greece and Asia as well. In 182 Commodus ( 180 – 192 A.D.) put them to death with the accusation of having conspired against him and confiscated their assets including the villa on the Via Appia that became one of the imperial residences.
